NUN-STOP LAUGHS WHEN SISTER STRIKES AGAIN AT BRISTOL RIVERSIDE THEATRE SEPTEMBER 7-11
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the classroom, Sister is back at Bristol Riverside Theatre presenting Sister Strikes Again on September 7-11. Written by Maripat Donovan and Vicki Quade, this one-woman interactive comedy features Nonie Newton-Riley returning to BRT after her success as Sister in Late Nite Catechism.
Performances run Wednesday, September 7 at 2:00 and 7:30, Thursday, September 8 at 7:30 PM, Friday, September 9 at 8:00 PM, Saturday, September 10 at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Sunday, September 11 at 3:00 PM. In this hit that is part catechism class and part stand-up comedy, Sister Strikes Again begins with an overview of heaven and hell as a Catholic version of Chutes and Ladders, and moves onto a proclamation of new sins for the new millennium. As Sister goes about determined to save the souls of those assembled (aka the audience), she provides a hilarious list of every celebrity sharing digs with the devil and peppers her list of “don’ts” with skewering attacks on tattoos, body-piercings and Botox injections. With all the wit, wisdom and wackiness of Late Nite Catechism, Sister Strikes Again appeals to all of Sister’s former students while making new converts.
NONIE NEWTON-RILEY (Sister) hails from a large Irish-Catholic mob in Chicago, honing her comedy skills at the dinner table then, later at Chicago’s Second City Theatre for several years. She played three seasons at the Green Mountain Guild in Vermont, toured with the improvisation group, The Reification Company, and enjoyed a two year run in Jerry Mayer’s Aspirin & Elephants at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Nominated for a Wilde Award in Detroit for best solo performance 2011 for Will My Bunny Go to Heaven, she earned an Emmy for writing and performing Oh, Art! for PBS in Chicago. For the last thirteen years, Newton-Riley has toured the country in Late Nite Catechism performing at Long Wharf Theatre, Laguna Beach Playhouse, Pasadena Playhouse, Olney Theatre, Kravis Center, The Lyric, Proctor Theatre, The Majestic-Empire, Kirkland Center, Eismann Center, and Wilson Center.
MARIPAT DONOVAN (Playwright) originated the role of Sister in Late Nite Catechism and has toured internationally, receiving rave reviews for her work in Chicago, Boston, Providence, New York, Toronto, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, London and Dublin. For her work in Late Nite Catechism, she was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award in New York for Outstanding Solo Performances and won the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Solo Performance in Los Angeles. She has worked in Chicago theatre for more than 20 years, winning Joseph Jefferson citations for her work in Portrait of a Shiksa and The Good Times are Killing Me.
VICKI QUADE (Playwright) is a Chicago writer, poet and editor. She has finished a sequel to Late Nite Catechism with Maripat Donovan, and also wrote Room for Advancement, which had its world premiere in 1994. Her comedy, Mr. Nanny, finished a successful nine-month run in 1998, and her newest piece, a musical, Lost in Wonderland, has had several staged readings.
BRT opens its 30th Anniversary Season with A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline by Dean Regan on September 27-October 16, followed by Working: A Musical adapted from the book by Studs Terkel and featuring new music by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) on November 1-20, Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Urhy on January 24-February 12, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar on March 21-April 16 and Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution on May 9-28.
Since 1986, BRT has brought consistently acclaimed professional theatre to Bucks County and maintains a long-term commitment to finding and developing new plays. The theatre is the recipient of over 68 Barrymore Award nominations for Excellence in Theatre, given annually by Theatre Philadelphia.
