In 1943 in Bodie, California, a decaying gold-rush city hundreds of miles from civilization, World War II is as unreal as the movies the inhabitants only get to hear about on the radio. Delores, a young woman who has never set foot outside of her decaying hometown but knows all about the world through glamour magazines, spends her days in abandoned houses pretending to have a family. She dreams of escaping a world of loners, miners and Japanese families sent to internment camps, but two bullies block her escape: the powerful landowner with an unnatural interest in her, and the boarding-house proprietor to whom she owes her life. Her ticket out arrives in the form of a war-wounded merchant marine who has picked this ghost town to settle down in.
