CAST

VANESSA SHAW (Marian, Mary Saunders Patterson, Maude) has just added published playwright to her long list of achievements. As both author and star of “Welcome Home, Marian Anderson” she has garnered rave reviews for her portrayal of one of America’s most beloved heroines. “Bringing this legend to the stage has been both rewarding and daunting” declares Miss Shaw “and worth every minute”. Before portraying Marian Anderson, Miss Shaw has graced the BROADWAY stage opposite such luminaries as Eartha Kitt in “Timbuktu” where she was cast in the role of Marsinah. In “Camelot” with Robert Goulet where she played the enchantress Nimue and stirred one New York critic to declare, “Vanessa Shaw stops the show with her rendition of “Follow Me”. She was seen as Ruth Younger opposite Debbie Allen and Joe Morton in Broadway's production of “Raisin” and Ginny in “Tap Dance Kid”. In addition to performing in the National Touring Companies of all of the above she has also starred in several productions of “Porgy and Bess” alternating the roles of Bess, Clara, Serena and Strawberry Woman. In “Carmen Jones", she has sung all the female leads from Carmen (soprano), to Frankie (mezzo-soprano) to Myrt (coloratura). Her regional theater experiences have included such heroines as Sonia Sedoya in “The Merry Widow”. Helene in “La Belle Helene”. Mrs. Segstrom in “A Little Night Music”. Vera Charles in “Mame”. Tuptim in “The King and I” and countless other musicals. Her classical and theater concerts have taken her literally all over the world and include the works of composers as diverse as Copeland, Bizet, Rogers and Hart/Hammerstein, Howard Roberts, Schubert, Stevie Wonder and Cole Porter. In the soap opera “One Life to Live she created the role of “Lila Rose”. In Independent Films she starred in “The Game”, “Walls and Bridges”, and her favorite" The Session” where she portrayed a psychopathic psychologist.

IVAN THOMAS (Billy King, Walter Winchell, Nazi, Walter White, etc.) began his carrer singing the role of Crown in Porgy and Bess at the lake George opera festival.  This production featured his teacher and mentor the late William Warfield as Porgy.  He has performed the role some 400 times on six continents.  He has appeared with the hamburg State Opera, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Italy, The Netherlands Opera co, Theater Oberhausen, Klagenfurt Opera, Berlin Kameroper, Berlin komische Oper, Baltimore Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Opera Memphis, and the Toledo Opera.  He has appeared with orchestras in San Diego, Milwaukee, Nashville, Calgary, Edmonton, Brussels, Strasbourg and Buenos Aires.  His Broadway credits include, Big River, On the Town, and he premiered the song "Heal Their Hearts" in Riverdance, The Show.  He can be seen in the videos Riverdance at Radio City, Blue Monday with Swiss-Italian Television, Street Scene with WDR television Cologne Germany and in the movies For One More Day and American Gangster.  He is currently on the faculty at Essex College in Newark, New Jersey.  He is pleased to be working with Vanessa Shaw and Mark Edward Lang once again 

MARK EDWARD LANG  (Kosti Vehanen, Sol Hurok, etc.) is a New York-based actor and director with over fifteen years of professional experience. He has played this role in New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, North Carolina, and the Clinton Presidential Center in Arkansas.  Regional stage work includes lead roles in Stones in his Pocket (Open Stage of Harrisburg); Terra Nova in South Carolina and The Importance of Being Earnest in South Carolina and Florida; War of the Worlds, The New York Idea and Why Marry? in New Jersey. Also 35 states on tour, with the National Shakespeare Company and others. He has studied with Royal Shakespeare Company directors, and at the New Actors Workshop.  Directing credits include O’Neill’s Anna Christie in Cape May, NJ; and Othello on 42nd Street in New York.  He is an honors graduate of Vassar College, and recipient of the Kazan Prize for Excellence. 


CREATIVE TEAM

MICHAEL J. ANTONIEWICZ (Lighting and Sound Designer ) is pleased to be reunited with Vanessa Shaw and company on "Welcome Home, Marian Anderson" here at Bristol. He previously designed lights and sound for the show in various small and interesting theatres in NYC.   Other recent design credits include lights for "Pretty Fire" and sets for the Third Annual Solo Flights Festival, both at Passage Theatre in Trenton, NJ. When not designing, Michael lends his technical skills to several local theatres, and has served as Master Electrician for several shows here at Bristol.

GREG MITCHELL (Scenic Designer) is thrilled to work with BRT and Keith Baker again after designing the set for The Skin of Our Teeth in 2004.  Greg has designed scenery and/or lighting for over a hundred productions in New York and regional theatre.  His design for American Buffalo at Washington DC's Source Theatre Company was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Set Design.  Recent projects include lighting designs for Forever Plaid at California's Sierra Repertory Theatre and two new plays in New York: Burn for New York Theatre Experiment at the Culture Project and A Good Farmer for the Three Graces Theatre Co. at the Bank Street Theatre.  Other favorites include Hansel and Gretel for Capital City Opera (DC), The Boys Next Door for American Stage Festival (NH), The Turn of the Screw for Penobscot Theatre Company (ME), and Jane Eyre for Capital Playhouse (WA).  Greg has served as a guest artist for Catholic University of America and The University of Maine.  He holds a MFA in Scenery and Lighting Design from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

LINDA BEE STOCKTON (Resident Costumer) was nominated for a Barrymore Award for her costume design for BRT’s production of Holiday.  Her other design credits include: Baby, Romeo and Juliet (Pennsylvania Shakespeare), Grimm’s Tales (Penn Youth Theatre), 42nd Street, Sweet Charity, Will Roger’s Follies, Oliver, The King and I, Me and My Girl, Kismet, Swing, Chicago, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Kiss Me Kate (to name a few) at Bucks County Playhouse.  Assistant Costume Design duties include: Evita, The Dresser, A Little Night Music, Hamlet and Smokey Joe’s Café at Bristol Riverside Theatre.  She has also designed The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, The Woman In Black, Cliffhanger, Olympus On My Mind, The Fantasticks, Proof, and The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge for BRT where she is also the resident Costumer.

JEFFERY V. THOMPSON (Director) is honored to have the opportunity to direct this production of Welcome Home, Marian Anderson starring his long-time friend, Vanessa Shaw. Mr. Thompson is well known in New York City as an actor, director and playwright. His directing credits include: Paul Robeson (Passage Theatre Company; starring Tony award-winner Chuck Cooper), Some of My Best Friends (The Producers Club; starring T'Keyah Crystal Keymah), Gorilla, My Love (Lincoln Center Institute and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park), All (Blackberry Productions), No Lie (Here), Letters to Grammie (New Professional Theater at The Public Theater), Penny O’Cleo (N.Y. Kids on Stage), Nefertiti: The Pyramid Queen (Josie's Cafe, San Francisco), The Dreamkeepers Speak (Triangle Theatre), Citikids Speak (Jacob Javit and the upcoming Shelter: Refugees of the American Dream (Blackberry Productions) . As an actor, he has appeared in several critically acclaimed productions on Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway as well as extensively in Regional Theaters across the United States. Mr. Thompson's scripts have been produced on Broadway, as well as at theaters in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Florida, Arkansas and Ohio. He dedicates this production to his supportive network of family and friends. "You Bless Me, Daily!"


LARRY RAMSEY (Production Associate) spent many years in educational theatre working in NYC public schools (John Dewey High, East Harlem Performing Arts, Jackie Robinson Intermediate) where he taught both drama and English. He directed/supervised/stage-managed middle and high school students in productions too numerous to count, including The Wiz, Hello, Dolly!, West Side Story, Oliver!, and Dreamgirls.  In addition, he has served as technical director for dance concerts and productions of many community-based organizations.  Other stage managing credits include: Blackberry Productions' presentations of Survivin' the Rhythm and Blues of Life and Worksong, both at Aaron Davis Hall, Linda Means to Wait and Voices of the Spirits in My Soul, both at RACCA's Seaport Salon, A Pure Gospel America in and around New York City, and Lipstick, Chili, Grits and Grace at the 2007 National Black Theater Festival in Winston-Salem, NC.  He holds an MFA in directing from Brooklyn College.
